LA JOLLA — Meet the second-grade authors and professional photographer who collaborated on the new book “Welcome, Baby Hummingbirds.”
The Perry Gallery in La Jolla Shores is hosting an exhibition of veteran photographer Essy Ghavameddini’s work, accompanied by a book-signing. Both Ghavameddini and the second-graders from Stella Maris Academy will be present to sign copies of the new book.
The charitable event will be held from 4:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday, May 26, at the Perry Gallery, located at 2218 Avenida de la Playa, La Jolla, CA 92037. Beverages and light snacks will be provided.
“Welcome, Baby Hummingbirds” features 29 original photos taken by Ghavameddini of a pair of hummingbirds rearing their two hatchlings, each photo paired with a charming caption written by one of the second-graders.
Seeking someone to write the accompanying text for his images, Ghavameddini had met with some professional writers, but none seemed to grasp his vision; he wasn’t looking for their polished writing and their large vocabularies, but rather for what he termed “baby talk.” That’s what led the Iranian-born photographer to Stella Maris Academy. After all, who better than a child to write like a child?
