History & Mission
Founded in 1912 as an independent Catholic publication, The Southern Cross became the official newspaper of the Diocese of San Diego in April 1937, at the request of the diocese’s founding bishop, Charles F. Buddy. The print edition of the newspaper is published at the beginning of each month, and serves as the foundation of the digital edition, whose content is updated continuously.
The publication, in print and online, shares meaningful news and events of the San Diego Diocese and of the broader Church; explores the central issues of the day; reflects and shares the rich cultural diversity at the diocese; presents insightful perspectives about pressing topics by local and nationally recognized columnists; offers relevant arts and entertainment content; and celebrates the traditions of the Church.
Mission
The Southern Cross assists the Catholic Church in its teaching and pastoral mission by informing the faithful about the life and work of the San Diego Diocese, which serves San Diego and Imperial Counties. The publication provides well-written, useful content to help Catholics to live their faith at all stages of their life, to strengthen families and communities and to support the Church in the U.S. and worldwide.
